10 Parenting Tips by Zed StoneWelcome to the wonderful world of parenting - It's arguably one of the most challenging and difficult jobs ever known. Everything that we do day in and day out affects our children and it's very important that we do the best that we can. It's like planting a seed and watching the flowers grow. If you neglect them and they will suffer - nourish them and we bask in their glory. Technology is on your side, we as parents can learn a lot from others and we don't have to do it alone. We can find help everywhere around us, whether it's on the Internet or offline. We can learn important lessons from successful parents, and from those who made mistakes. Remember, you can learn from yourself just by paying attention to the things that we do with our own children. Our children tell us a lot about what they want and/or need from us as parents, we just need to take the time to stop and listen. Life is a crazy roller coaster ride and we often get side tracked. Sometimes it's not easy to dedicate yourself to one task when there is a billion things going around us. Whether it's dealing with the pressures of a job or just from the daily grind of being a good parent - we have to stay focused. It's very easy to get caught up in the little details in life and forget our role. As long as we don't forget the key things of being a parent (love, time, responsibilities) - we can afford to make some mistakes on our journey. What skills help make a great parent? Some important things to consider: - Being an effective role model So you may be wondering why the above points are so important? Whether you notice it or not, your child watches everything you do. You need to be someone they can look up to. Being there as a friend, or helping others when they need help are some characteristics. Remember, your child will mimic certain characteristics that you display. If you're a role model, it will help them develop into someone that you can be proud of. Another often over-looked aspect of parenting is time and attention. Why? It's one of the most precious gifts that we can ever give to our children. I can't think of an easier way to show your child that you care and love them. So what do you do when you encounter something that you are unsure of? As I mentioned earlier - you're not alone. - The Internet is a collection of many resources. Use it to your advantage. Everyone has their own style or comfort zone when they need to ask for help. So whether you like to deal with other people, learning from books or instructional DVD's - choose the one that is right for you. Remember - Knowledge is the key to success. Every now and then we all need some help. You're not the only one that goes through situations that are tough to deal with. Why suffer and potentially make one of the biggest mistakes in your life when you try to handle the situation? Relax, and prepare yourself - you're going to be just fine. Caring. Sounds easy enough doesn't it? For some people - yes it is. To others, it's a challenge of its own. Caring comes in different forms. There's the emotional care and the physical care. Spoiling your kid by buying everything your child wants doesn't cut it most of the time. There will be some downfalls later on in life - so use it sparingly (trust me!). Back on topic, caring - it's easy to think that by making sure our children are fed, and clothed that we are doing our job. Remember, that's only a part of it - never forget the emotional care that our children also need. Talk to your kids, play with them and most importantly - challenge them intellectually. Like most people, time is at a premium sometimes. Running around maintaining the home or working 9 to 5. We are often too tired to do anything and just want to sit and relax. Just giving a little bit of time and attention during the day to your child can reap awesome rewards. Honestly, it's the best and easiest way to show your child that you love them. Simple acts of letting them help you around the house or having them read it to you while you fold the laundry. That's all it takes sometimes. The main point is - spend time with your children. At least for part of each day, they need to be the centre of attention. This helps to show them that they are important. Remember - there is no such thing as perfect parents. We would all like to be perfect but it's impossible. All we need to do as a good parent is to be the best parent that we possibly can. It's not that hard. Stay disciplined, focused and most importantly - have fun doing it! About the AuthorNeed additional help with parenting? Zed writes regularly for PremierParents.com. |
