Christmas around the World
Benefits of Solar Christmas Lights
September 1st, 2010Nothing quite conjures up the winter holiday mood like the twinkling of Christmas lights. In some parts of the country that receives sufficient sun light during the winter day, it might make a lot of sense to consider using solar powered Christmas lights this year. There are many benefits to solar lights such as the savings on your electricity bills and knowing that you are doing the planet a favor by relying on a renewable energy source.
The great thing is that while it might sound like more advanced technology than traditional Christmas lights, the solar powered option will not cost much more. A box might cost around $10 depending on size and quality. Comparable to traditional string lights, each box is only a few dollars more but consider the long term pay off of not incurring an increase in your electrical bill while running the lights all night every night of the season.
Some of the best models have a separate solar panel on a stake connected with a long wire. This allows you to install the solar panel anywhere that you determined to be optimal for direct exposure to sun light. Usually this would be on a roof or in a clearing in the backyard. Watch out for shade during periods of the day since it would be a good idea to avoid these as much as possible.
There are limitations to solar lights and the greatest limitation today is the brightness level produced by the LED lamps of solar lights. Since the amount of energy consumption must be minimized to keep the battery from prematurely running empty, the lamps often cannot burn as bright as traditional incandescent bulbs. They are, however, much more efficient in terms of energy consumption to light produced. If you do not need your Christmas lights to be seen from space then the brightness level should not be too much of a concern.
A common question people have when it comes to Christmas lights is when to throw them out. For some reason people like to keep their old lights even when we cannot determine which of the bulbs is breaking the chain so the entire string is inoperable. Since these lights are not even that expensive, it makes sense to throw them out whenever you find it too hectic to untangle the mess. Maybe that is the opportunity to try solar Christmas lights this season.
